Seal for Starter Leak |
| I know you have heard about putting a seal in your starter so it
cannot leak out of the weep hole on the bottom of the starter. The
problem is getting a seal that doesn't bend all out of shape when
you install it. The typical seal is manufactured by C/R
(Chicago/Rawhide), but this seal is made with VERY soft steel and is
easily distorted when you try to install it. The solution is to go
to your local NAPA dealer and ask for seal SKF 6720. This is an
over-the-counter seal and is much tougher than the C/R seal, yet has
the same dimensions.
To install the seal, remove the rear starter bushing by pounding it out of the casing. Don't worry about pounding over the bronze as you will need to cut ¾" off the end of the bushing you were pounding on. (If the bushing is worn badly, it is wise to install a new bushing, but you still need to cut ¾" off the end). Dress up the bushing with a file and press the bushing back into the starter casting. Now take the NAPA seal and install it where the ¾"of the bushing you cut off was located. The easiest way to install the bushing is to find a socket which is the same diameter as the seal, and tap the seal in with the aid of the socket. Make sure you lubricate the bushing as this was lubricated by engine oil originally, and was designed to leak out the weep hole when too much oil entered the starter!!! With this fix, you will have one less leak to worry about.
